Portsea
Island Church Registers Master Index Portsmouth Records Office holds vital records for seventy churches of various denominations that are or were situated on Portsea Island (Portsmouth) between 1654 and the present day. These records are held variously as microfiche, microfilm and the original registers. Some have been indexed in a card system, a few on computer; these indexes are not continuous and are seperate for Church of England, Roman Catholic and Non-Conformist registers. In addition there are records for nine Army and Navy chapels, including some on-ship baptisms, held elsewhere. This all makes searching for baptisms, marriages and burials a tricky task. To help with this I have created a master index that pulls all this information together and shows in one document what registers are available and in what form and also indicates which parts have been indexed. It shows the whereabouts of and contact information for registers not held in Portsmouth RO and includes up-to-date information on Army and Navy chapel registers, information that is not currently available elsewhere. It is presented in a "timeline" format; so if you are searching for, say, a marriage in 1826, you just find the column 1800-1850 and then look down that column on each page to see which marriage registers are available for that date and if they have been indexed. To read my index you will need to have Acrobat Reader - if you haven't got it click here to download the latest version - it's FREE. To download my index click here. It's also FREE, I hope you find it useful. This is a relatively recent project and I hope it will build into a large collection as time goes on. At the moment it is restricted to churches linked to my family history plus all churches on Portsea Island (Portsmouth). Clicking on the church names below will display web-resolution image/s of the church, mostly my original photos but also including postcards images where I have them. You can download the images by 'right clicking' and selecting 'Save picture as..'. If you would like a higher resolution (larger) copy please contact me using the Feedback facility. If you publish any of the photos an acknowledgement (and a link if possible) would be appreciated. To link with my Master Index (see above) I have put the Portsmouth churches first followed by the other Hampshire churches, then other counties in alphabetical order. Under each image is the date of that image together with notes on the date of the building as seen.
